đ€ Interview by âD-Man,â CTF Inmate Correspondent
This Sunday kicked off with chaos. Bright and early, building officers informed Cain he was trans-packing for court. For the uninitiated, that means boxing up all your belongings, hauling them to Receiving & Release, and then waitingâsometimes daysâfor a van to haul you off to county jail.
In Cainâs case, heâs headed back only to testify in a pending case. (We wonât discuss the details for legal reasons.) Originally, he thought heâd be leaving todayâbut it turns out heâs not rolling out until Thursday. And he wonât return until court wrapsâcould be a day, a week, maybe longer.
Despite all that, by noon, Cain was back on the yard. My celly even made tostadas to celebrate Cainâs birthday, which is tomorrowâJuly 28. Cain returned the gesture by buying ice cream for a few of us as part of his own celebration.
He still led our breathwork class, and afterward, we sat down for our usual Sunday talk.
Â
đ§ CAIN THE HEALER
Yesterday, I saw Cain working on a guy in the dayroomâlooked like some kind of physical therapy session.
âHis pec and shoulder were super tight,â Cain said. âI was breaking down the knots.â
He looked like a pro doing it, so I asked where he learned all that.
âIn college, our physical therapists worked on us after practice and matches,â he explained.
âWith the UFC, though, youâre like a general contractor. You hire your own teamâout of your own pocket. I learned to do this kind of stuff on myself.â
At that moment, Cain grabbed a softball from a guy next to usâthe same one he showed him how to use for muscle release.
đ§ ASCENSION ON THE YARD
Cainâs sign-up sheets for Ascension Breathwork got taken downâbut not before the classes filled up. Two full rosters. 30 men each. Thatâs 60 lives touched.
Each roster trains twice a week. Two guys are already shadowing Cain to keep the program alive once he transfers out next year.
âïž BACK TO COUNTY
After our Sunday session, I asked Cain how he feels about heading back to county jail.
âHopefully itâs not for long,â he said. âBut it was a good learning experience. County helped me get better connected with my higher self.â
I asked how long he was there before prison.
âNine months.â
âïž TOOLS & TESTS
Cain recently retook his Power Tools exam.
âDidnât pass that one,â he said with a smile.
âBut I did pass the Blueprints & Drawings testâand I didnât even study for that one.â
đ REFLECTIONS
Has incarceration changed his relationship with his emotions?
âItâs made me more positive. More sensitive. More compassionate. And more resilient.â
When he looks back on the night everything changedâwhat does he feel?
âRegret. Conviction. Love. Shame⊠all of it. There was no right choice. I know I messed upâbut I did it out of love. I hurt other people. I hurt my family. Itâs a mix of everything at once.â
đšđ§ FATHERHOOD REIMAGINED
What does fatherhood mean now?
âItâs sacred. I just want to be present. I missed all of my daughterâs games but one. I want to watch her play soccer.â
I told him I get it. I miss my daughters so much, my chest physically hurts.
đ„ BACKYARD SMOKE WITH HISTORY?
Time to lighten it up.
If Cain could challenge one historical figure to a backyard brawl?
âAbraham Lincoln,â he answered, instantly.
Why?
âHe signed off on the largest mass execution by a U.S. Presidentâ41 Lakota Chiefs and Medicine Men. It was a massacre.â
So youâd fight him to set the record straight?
âOh, Iâd beat on him pretty bad.â
I could tell this wasnât the first time heâd thought about this fight.
đȘ THE STONJIÄ FIGHT & FATHERHOOD NEWS
We circled back to his MMA daysâspecifically the six months between O'Brien and StojniÄ. Thatâs when Michelle told him she was pregnant.
âWe were at her apartment,â Cain recalled. âShe sat me down on the couch and told me.â
What went through his mind?
âThat our family was growing. But I didnât feel ready. My mind was always on war. I was learning about myself through combat. Bringing love into that? I didnât feel mature enough. I was nervous.â
Despite the nerves, Cain kept winning.
What does he remember about Denis StojniÄ?
âIt was in Florida. He trained with Golden Glory out of the Netherlands.â
Did Cain take pride in representing Mexico?
âYeah. I wanted to fight like Salvador Sanchez and Julio Cesar Chavezâalways forward. All offense. Run through guys.â
And against StojniÄ?
âHe had a good chin. But yeahâI ran through him.âWas family there for the fight?
âNo. They didnât support my fighting at first. Theyâd ask why I wasnât using my degree. Theyâd watch on TV⊠but it was hard for them to see me get hurt. They didnât really get it.â
So did he go celebrate with a beer?
âNah. I was always super critical of myself. My punches werenât dropping guys like I wanted. People were saying I looked great, but all I saw were the mistakes.â
Back to the gym right away?
âYep. I loved training. I couldâve trained forever. The fights were just the test.â
đ FAN QUESTION OF THE WEEK
@TruthSeekerTraining asked:
Cain, are there any specific books that changed your mindset or helped guide your thinking in prison?
âYeah. Rain of Gold by Victor Villaseñor. Heâs Yaqui, like me. I actually tried to get him on a podcast once, but he never responded. Itâs about two families during the Mexican Revolution. They lose loved ones. Go hungry. But they stay graceful. They stay connected to God.
Another book I readâcanât remember the nameâit was about the Holocaust. A man survives a concentration camp just by holding onto the thought of seeing his family again.
And then thereâs The Kybalion. The 7 Hermetic Principles. Iâve read it before, but got it again in county jail. I call them the laws of the universe.â
We may not have Cain next Sundayâcourt could keep him longer. But Iâll still bring you a Sundays Without Cain edition, with the mood and motion of the yard minus the big guy.
Till then, stay grounded.
